Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

what is an abdominoplasty ...

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. It may also involve tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles for some individuals. It is typically considered by those who want to alter the appearance of their stomach following significant weight loss, pregnancy, or ageing.

Individuals choose to undergo Abdominoplasty for various reasons, including:

  • Reduce excess abdominal skin/skin folds.
  • Address Muscle separation (diastasis recti) after pregnancy.
  • Reduce excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise.
  • Reduce skin irritation or hygiene issues caused by skin folds.
  • Alleviate functional concerns such as poor posture or core support.

types of abdominoplasty ...

Partial Abdominoplasty: Involves tightening and removing skin and fat from the lower abdomen only. It may be suitable for patients with mild to moderate concerns below the navel and does not require repositioning of the belly button.

Full Abdominoplasty: A Full Abdominoplasty involves removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, typically from the area between the pubic region and the navel. It also allows for the tightening of abdominal muscles and repositioning of the navel. This option may be suited to individuals with more significant skin laxity or muscle separation.

Liposuction Assisted Abdominoplasty: In some cases, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with Abdominoplasty to assist in shaping the surrounding areas, such as the flanks or upper abdomen. This approach may be suitable for individuals with good skin tone who want fat removal in addition to tissue tightening.

am I a suitable candidate ...

Suitable candidates for Abdominoplasty surgery typically meet the following criteria:

  • Are in good overall health with no contraindications for surgery.
  • Are at or near a stable weight.
  • Do not smoke or are willing and able to quit in advance of surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations about the procedure
  • Are bothered by the appearance of their abdomen despite diet and exercise.
  • Do not plan significant future weight loss, weight gain, or pregnancy.

Our surgeons perform all Abdominoplasty surgeries in accredited hospitals while patients are under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.

Generally, your surgeon will make an incision along the lower abdomen (possibly around the navel), and they will then remove the excess skin and fat, tighten underlying muscles, and move the position of the navel (if necessary). Once your surgeon is satisfied, they will close the incisions with sutures/stitches (internally and externally) and apply a dressing.

Yes, you will require a GP referral. As of 1 July 2023, AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) requires all patients to obtain a referral from a GP (General Practitioner).

Recovery following Abdominoplasty surgery will vary from patient to patient, but most individuals can expect a manageable and progressive healing process. A degree of pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising is to be expected during the initial stages of recovery. These symptoms are usually most pronounced in the first few days after surgery but should gradually lessen as the body heals.

Immediate Post-Operative Period

In the first week following surgery, you can expect to experience some pain, sensitivity, and swelling around the incision sites. You may also find it difficult to stand upright and may need to walk slightly hunched over for several days. Discomfort is typically managed with prescription medications and over-the-counter pain relief, as recommended by your surgeon. Applying ice packs during the first 48 hours can also help reduce swelling and increase comfort.

Throughout your recovery, you will be required to wear a support or compression garment. This garment helps to provide stability, reduce swelling, protect the surgical incisions, and support optimal healing of the abdominal area.

Wound Care and Activity Modifications

Your surgeon and our team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions tailored to your individual surgical plan. These guidelines will cover how to care for your incision sites, signs of complications to watch for, how to shower, and when to resume activities.

It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least a few weeks after surgery. Most patients are advised to rest and limit physical activity during the first few weeks, gradually returning to light daily tasks as they feel able. Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work within 2 weeks, provided your duties are not physically demanding.

Long-Term Healing and Results

Swelling can take several weeks or even months to fully dissipate, and your final results may not be visible until this has subsided. Scars will continue to mature and fade over the following 6–12 months. Wearing your support garment, following post-operative care instructions, and attending follow-up appointments will help optimise your surgical outcome.

Our surgeons are committed to making sure each patient receives high-quality care throughout their recovery. You’ll have access to ongoing guidance, and the team will be available to answer any questions you may have along the way.

As with all surgical procedures, Abdominoplasty carries potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss potential risks and complications during your consultation as part of the informed consent process. Visit our Risks and Complications page for more information. Risks and complications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or haematoma
  • Scarring
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Asymmetry
  • Anaesthetic risks

Abdominoplasty costs vary based on the complexity and duration of surgery, hospital fees (how long you stay in hospital), and anaesthetist fees. After you consult with a surgeon, a detailed quote will be provided for your specific procedure. Private health insurance or Medicare may provide partial rebates for eligible patients.

If the procedure is being performed solely for cosmetic reasons, you will not be eligible for cover from Medicare. However, Abdominoplasty may be eligible for a Medicare rebate under item number 30177. Eligibility criteria include:

  • Significant weight loss (usually 5 BMI points or more)
  • Intertrigo (skin irritation/infections under the skin folds)
  • Impact on daily life activities

Your eligibility will be assessed during consultation, and supporting documentation may be required.

It is important to note that even if you are eligible for a rebate from Medicare, you will still have out-of-pocket costs, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

FAQs ...

Yes, abdominoplasty can include alleviation of diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles), which is often a concern after pregnancy. This can help increase abdominal strength and core function. Your surgeon will assess muscle tone during your consultation and will discuss whether it will be part of your surgical plan.

Abdominoplasty is most suitable for those who have finished having children. Pregnancy after surgery can stretch the abdominal muscles and skin again, potentially affecting the outcome of the procedure. Our surgeons recommend delaying surgery until your family planning is complete to maintain long-term results.

Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. While the removal of excess skin and fat may lead to a slight reduction in weight, its primary purpose is to reshape and tighten the abdominal area. It’s most effective for individuals who are already close to their goal weight but want to reduce excess skin from the lower abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital. Our surgeons work with experienced anaesthetists, prioritising your safety and comfort during the procedure. Modern anaesthetic techniques and post-operative pain control protocols help support the recovery process.

The results of Abdominoplasty can be long-lasting when supported by a stable weight and balanced lifestyle. However, factors such as ageing, future pregnancies, or weight changes can influence the long-term outcome. Your surgeon will discuss how to maintain your results during your follow-up visits.
