Liposuction

what is liposuction ...

Liposuction is a recognised surgical procedure used to remove stubborn fat deposits that may not respond to lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. It can assist with altering the body shape in targeted areas.

types of liposuction ...

Liposuction treatment areas may include:

  • Abdomen and waist: Often selected by patients who have persistent fat in this region due to factors such as ageing, past pregnancies, or weight fluctuations. Suitability for liposuction depends on factors like skin quality and muscle tone.
  • Hips and flanks: Fat in this area may affect the way clothing fits. Some individuals seek liposuction here to address this.
  • Outer and inner thighs: Localised fat deposits in the thighs may lead to friction or differences in proportion between the upper and lower body.
  • Upper arms: Some patients find that fat in this area does not respond to physical activity or weight loss efforts.
  • Under the chin and neck: Excess fat in this area can be addressed to increase definition in the transition between the lower face and upper neck.
  • Back or bra-line region: Some individuals experience excess fat in this area that may cause discomfort or concern.

am I a suitable candidate ...

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure and is not suitable for the treatment of obesity. It is intended for individuals who are close to their goal weight but have areas of localised fat that have not responded to ongoing lifestyle efforts such as diet and exercise.

During your consultation, your surgeon will review your medical history, discuss your goals, and determine whether this procedure is suitable for your needs. Patients with a BMI over 30 may require additional medical assessment.

You may be a suitable candidate for liposuction if you:

  • You are at or near your goal weight.
  • You are at a stable weight and have been able to maintain the same weight for at least 6 months.
  • Have localised fat deposits in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, or upper arms that have not been altered with lifestyle changes.
  • Have adequate skin elasticity, allowing it to adapt to changes in body shape following fat removal.
  • You are in good general health and are a non-smoker, as smoking may affect healing and increase surgical risks.
  • Have realistic expectations and an understanding that results will vary for each individual.

The procedure is carried out in a fully accredited hospital in sterile conditions, under anaesthesia to support patient comfort. The typical surgical process includes the following steps:

Anaesthesia: In most cases, general anaesthesia is used, allowing patients to remain unconscious during the procedure. For smaller, localised treatments, local anaesthesia may be considered.

Tumescent infiltration: A fluid mixture containing saline, anaesthetic, and a vasoconstrictor is infused into the targeted area. This helps to loosen fat cells, reduce bleeding, and facilitate fat removal.

Fat removal via cannula: A small, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through incisions. Using a Microaire power-assisted device, our surgeons perform controlled fat extraction, shaping the treated area.

Incision closure and compression: Incisions may be closed with sutures or left open, depending on the extent of treatment and surgical plan. A compression garment is typically applied after surgery to support the healing process and assist with swelling.

Yes, you will require a GP referral. As of 1 July 2023, AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) requires all patients to obtain a referral from a GP (General Practitioner).

Recovery after body liposuction differs between individuals and is influenced by several factors, including the size of the treated area, the amount of fat removed, your general health, and how closely post-operative instructions are followed. While your experience may vary, the following is a general guide to what you may expect during the recovery process:

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising are expected following liposuction and generally reach their peak within the first few days after surgery. These responses are part of the body’s healing process and usually persist for 2–3 weeks before gradually settling. In some cases, mild swelling may continue for several weeks to months, depending on individual healing responses.

Discomfort and Pain Management

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the days following surgery. This can typically be managed with oral pain relief prescribed by your surgeon or recommended over-the-counter medications.

Rest, the use of cold packs (as advised), and light movement may also help alleviate discomfort during this stage. It’s important not to apply ice directly to the skin or surgical areas unless specifically directed.

Fluid Drainage

Some patients may notice drainage of fluid from the incision sites, particularly if small incisions have been left open. This is an expected part of the early healing process and is monitored closely. Dressings may be changed regularly to maintain hygiene and comfort.

Compression Garments

Compression garments are generally worn day and night for the first 4 weeks and during the daytime for an additional 4–8 weeks, or as advised by Dr Kode. These garments are designed to support the surgical area, help manage swelling, and assist in maintaining the shape of the treated region during healing. It is important to wear them as directed to support your recovery.

Early Mobilisation

Unless otherwise instructed, patients are typically told to begin light movement within 24 hours after surgery. Early mobilisation helps maintain circulation and may reduce the risk of complications such as blood clots. Walking short distances and performing light daily activities are usually appropriate. However, strenuous activities, including lifting, vigorous exercise, or stretching, should be avoided for approximately 4–6 weeks, or until cleared by your surgeon.

Post-Operative Care

Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions tailored to each patient’s procedure and recovery needs. Regular follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor healing, address any concerns, and provide guidance throughout your recovery period.

As with all surgical procedures, Liposuction carries potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss potential risks and complications during your consultation as part of the informed consent process. Visit our Risks and Complications page for more information. Risks and complications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Bruising, swelling, or temporary discomfort
  • Asymmetry
  • Changes in skin sensation, which are usually temporary, but may be permanent
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma) that may require drainage
  • Infection or delayed healing, particularly if aftercare instructions are not followed

The overall cost of liposuction surgery depends on multiple factors, such as:

  • Number of areas treated: Treating one area versus multiple areas will affect surgical time and complexity.
  • Anaesthesia and hospital fees: Costs vary depending on the facility and whether general or local anaesthesia is used.
  • Garments and aftercare: Post-operative garments and follow-up appointments are part of the overall care plan.
  • Surgeon’s time and experience: Each procedure performed by our surgeons includes comprehensive planning, direct surgical care, and dedicated post-operative support.

FAQs ...

No. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. It is a surgical method used to remove localised fat deposits that do not respond to regular diet and exercise.

Initial changes can be noticed within a few weeks as swelling starts to subside. However, it may take up to six to 12 months for the final result to be visible as your body continues to heal and adjust.

Liposuction removes fat, but it does not tighten significantly lax skin. Patients with reduced skin elasticity may be advised to consider additional procedures, such as abdominoplasty or Brachioplasty (Arm Lift), depending on the area involved. This will be discussed during your consultation with your surgeon.

Fat cells that are removed during liposuction do not regenerate. However, remaining fat cells in the body can still expand if significant weight is gained after surgery. Maintaining a stable weight is key to long-lasting results.

Recovery times vary based on the area treated and the volume of fat removed. Most patients return to light activities within a few days, but swelling, bruising, and discomfort may persist for several weeks. Full recovery may take 4–6 weeks, and compression garments are typically worn during this time.

Liposuction involves small incisions, usually only a few millimetres long. These are placed in discreet locations and generally fade over time. Our surgeons use meticulous techniques to reduce scarring, and scar care advice is part of your aftercare plan.
