Labiaplasty

what is Labiaplasty ...

For some individuals, enlarged or asymmetrical labia can cause physical discomfort, irritation, or distress in everyday activities, clothing, or intimate situations. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the size or shape of the labia minora (inner lips) and, in some cases, the labia majora (outer lips) of the vulva. It is generally performed to address physical discomfort caused by chafing, irritation, or hygiene issues, or to revise asymmetry or changes that have occurred due to ageing, childbirth, or hormonal factors. The procedure involves strategic reshaping or removal of excess tissue while aiming to preserve function and sensation. Labiaplasty is performed under local or general anaesthetic in an accredited surgical facility.

types of Labiaplasty ...

The technique chosen for Labiaplasty depends on your anatomy, the changes you wish to see, and the overall aesthetic goal. Each method offers potential advantages, and Dr Kode will help guide you toward the most suitable option.

Trim Technique

The trim method is one of the surgical approaches for Labiaplasty. It involves removing a small strip of tissue along the outer edge of the labia minora to reduce length and leave a neater edge. It is generally considered a straightforward technique with consistent outcomes, particularly when the primary concern relates to the outer border of the labia minora. However, the procedure still has potential risks and complications to be aware of.

This technique may be appropriate for individuals who wish to:

  • Reduce darker pigmentation along the labial margin
  • Smooth the outer edge of the labia
  • Address localised irregularities or tissue prominence

Wedge Technique

The wedge technique involves the surgical removal of a wedge-shaped segment from the central portion of the labia minora, while preserving the outer edge. This approach may be suitable for individuals who prefer to maintain the appearance of the labial margins while addressing excess tissue.

This method may be considered appropriate when the goal is to:

  • Maintain the original border and pigmentation of the labial edge
  • Reduce tissue volume while retaining the texture and colour
  • Reduce the appearance of scars on the outer edge of the labia

am I a suitable candidate ...

Labiaplasty may be appropriate for individuals who experience physical discomfort or functional concerns related to their labial anatomy. This may include cases where the labia minora extend beyond the labia majora, potentially leading to rubbing, chafing, hygiene difficulties, or visibility through clothing.

You may be a good candidate for Labiaplasty if:

  • You experience physical discomfort during exercise or daily activities. Movement such as walking, cycling, or certain forms of exercise may cause discomfort or chafing if the labial tissue is elongated or exposed.
  • Tight clothing that causes irritation or friction. Fitted garments like underwear, swimwear, or activewear may lead to pinching or rubbing, which can become bothersome over time.
  • Changes have occurred after childbirth or with age. Ageing, hormonal fluctuations, or childbirth may alter the shape, symmetry, or size of the labia, leading to functional concerns or discomfort.
  • You are over 18 and medically fit for surgery. Labiaplasty is only performed on adults. A full consultation is required to assess your overall health, discuss your concerns, and determine whether surgery is suitable for your individual circumstances.
  • You have realistic expectations and a clear understanding of the procedure. An informed discussion with Dr Kode will help you understand the potential risks, recovery process, and likely outcomes.

Labiaplasty is usually performed as a day procedure, which means you return home the same day as the procedure. The operation typically takes under one hour, depending on the complexity of the case.

Anesthesia Options:

Local Anaesthetic (LA): May be suitable for individuals undergoing a less surgically complex procedure who prefer to remain awake. The area is numbed, and patients are typically able to return home shortly after surgery.

General Anaesthetic (GA): May be appropriate for individuals who feel anxious about the procedure or when Labiaplasty is performed alongside another surgery. General anaesthesia allows the patient to remain unconscious and comfortable throughout the operation.

Yes, you will require a GP referral. As of 1 July 2023, AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) requires all patients to obtain a referral from a GP (General Practitioner).

Healing is a key part of any surgical journey. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions and will be available throughout the recovery process to answer questions and monitor healing.

Immediate Post-Operative (Days 1–3):

  • Expect some swelling, tenderness, and mild bruising in the area. These symptoms are an expected part of the healing process and generally resolve with bed rest, cool compresses, and pain relief.
  • Patients need to wear supportive underwear, stay hydrated, and listen to their surgeon’s instructions. Keeping the area clean is important during this period.

First 2 Weeks:

  • Swelling begins to subside.
  • You may return to light, non-strenuous activity such as walking or working at a desk.
  • Sutures dissolve on their own, so there’s no need for removal.
  • Avoid baths, saunas, or swimming until cleared by your surgeon.

Weeks 3–6:

  • Sexual activity and vigorous exercise should still be avoided, but can be resumed once cleared by your surgeon.
  • You’ll begin to see the results of the surgery as healing progresses.

As with any surgical procedure, a Labiaplasty involves potential risks. Your surgeon will discuss potential risks and complications during your consultation as part of the informed consent process. Visit our Risks and Complications page for more information. Risks and complications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Bleeding during or after the procedure.
  • Infection at the surgical site.
  • Delayed wound healing, particularly in areas under tension or friction.
  • Changes in sensation, which may be temporary or, in rare cases, long-lasting or permanent.
  • Asymmetry between the labia following healing.
  • Poor scarring, which may be visible or cause discomfort.
  • Haematoma (a collection of blood beneath the skin).
  • Persistent swelling beyond the expected timeframe.
  • Dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome, which may require revision surgery.
  • Need for secondary procedures in cases of complications or to alter results from the first surgery.

The cost of Labiaplasty varies based on several key factors:

  • Type of anaesthesia required: Local is generally more affordable, while general anaesthesia incurs additional hospital fees.
  • Complexity of the surgery: Asymmetry, prior scarring, or multiple procedures may influence pricing.
  • Hospital or surgical facility charges: These differ depending on location and duration of the procedure.
  • Follow-up care and support: Included in the total cost.

Exact pricing is not displayed online to comply with AHPRA guidelines, but a comprehensive quote is provided after you consult with your surgeon.

Where medically indicated (such as for chronic discomfort), some patients may be eligible for rebates through private health insurance. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

In most cases, labiaplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

In limited circumstances, Medicare eligibility may be possible when surgery is performed to address a clearly documented, significant functional medical issue (not purely cosmetic) and strict Medicare requirements are met. If you’d like help understanding whether Medicare may apply in your situation, please get in touch with Me Clinic, and our team can guide you through the usual steps.

FAQs ...

Labiaplasty is performed with careful consideration of the surrounding anatomy to help preserve sensation and function. Changes in sensation may occur temporarily due to swelling or nerve involvement during healing. In most cases, sensation gradually returns over time. While rare, some individuals may experience prolonged changes. These risks will be discussed with you during your consultation to support informed decision-making.

Most patients return to desk-based work and light activities within a few days. However, more strenuous physical activity, including exercise and sexual intercourse, should be avoided for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Recovery timelines vary, and your surgeon will provide personalised guidance and follow-up care throughout the healing process.

All surgical procedures involve some degree of scarring. In labiaplasty, the incisions are placed in discreet areas and typically heal well over time. Many patients find that the scars become faint or virtually undetectable. Our surgeons use fine suturing techniques and careful incision placement to support healing.

No. While some patients choose labiaplasty for aesthetic preferences, others seek the procedure to relieve physical discomfort, irritation, or hygiene concerns. Whether the motivation is functional, aesthetic, or both, the procedure is tailored to your specific needs and goals, with patient comfort and wellbeing always at the centre of care.

Preparation involves maintaining good general health, ceasing smoking (if applicable), and avoiding certain supplements or medications that may affect bleeding or healing. You will receive a comprehensive pre-operative guide from your surgeon, along with instructions on hygiene, fasting (if under general anaesthetic), and post-operative care planning.

While most patients are satisfied with their results, individual healing can vary. If further alteration is desired, revision surgery may be considered after a full recovery period. Our surgeons are committed to supporting every patient through their recovery and providing honest, compassionate advice on next steps if needed.
