Monsplasty (Pubic Lift)

what is a monsplasty ...

Monsplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the mons pubis by removing excess fat, skin, or tissue. The approach depends on the patient’s anatomy and may involve Liposuction, surgical removal of tissue, or both. The goal is to alter the mons area, so it is more proportionate with the surrounding abdomen and pubic region.

The procedure is tailored to the individual’s anatomy and goals and is often performed in conjunction with other abdominal procedures.

types of monsplasty procedures ...

The technique used will depend on the amount of fat, skin, and tissue. Types of Monsplasty procedures include:

  • Liposuction only: For patients with excess fat and suitable skin tone/quality, Liposuction can help reduce fullness in the mons pubis. This technique involves a small incision in the suprapubic area (the lower abdomen located just above the pubic bone). As it is not as invasive as other techniques does not require as much recovery time.
  • Excision and lift: For patients with significant tissue and/or skin excess, Dr Kode may perform a surgical removal and lift of the mons pubis. Incisions are usually placed where the mons pubis meets the lower abdomen to reduce scar visibility. Closure is performed in layers with sutures beneath the skin.
  • Monsplasty with Abdominoplasty: When patients undergo an Abdominoplasty, Monsplasty may be performed at the same time for a balanced approach to the abdominal and pubic regions.

concerns a monsplasty may address ...

The size and shape of the mons pubis differ between individuals. Although the reasons individuals consider Monsplasty vary, people may consider surgery for one or more of the following reasons:

  • A persistent fullness of the mons pubis despite lifestyle changes.
  • Discomfort with clothing such as swimwear or fitted garments.
  • Discomfort during physical activity.
  • Concerns about changes to the mons area after weight fluctuations, ageing, or previous surgery.
  • A desire for the mons pubis to be more proportionate to the surrounding body areas.

am I a suitable candidate ...

There are several considerations when determining suitability for surgery. Monsplasty may be considered for individuals who:

  • Are in good general health, with no underlying health problems that could affect surgery or its results.
  • Have excess fat, skin, or tissue in the mons pubis.
  • Have a stable body weight.
  • Have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes.
  • Understand the risks and complications of the procedure.
  • Are non-smokers or are they willing to stop smoking at least three months before surgery.
  • Anaesthesia: Your surgeon will typically perform the procedure while patients are under general anaesthesia. In some cases, usually liposuction-only procedures, the procedure can be performed while the patient is under local anaesthetic, although our surgeons do not generally recommend this.
  • Surgery time: Liposuction-only procedures take around 30 minutes. However, surgery involving excision of tissue and skin may take up to one hour.
  • Incisions: Incisions are usually made in the crease between the mons and lower abdomen.
  • Removal of excess skin and/or tissue: Your surgeon will remove the excess fat through liposuction, direct excision, or both. They will then remove any excess skin (if required).
  • Closure: Closure is typically performed with dissolvable sutures beneath the skin.

Yes, you will require a GP referral. As of 1 July 2023, AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) requires all patients to obtain a referral from a GP (General Practitioner).

Immediate Post-Operative Period

When Monsplasty is performed on its own, patients are generally able to return home the same day. Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are to be expected during the early recovery period and will dissipate over time. Prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs can help manage discomfort in the first few days. Patients are usually advised to rest in a flat position during this stage.

Wound Care and Activity Restrictions

During the first few days after surgery, rest is advised while incorporating light walking to support circulation. Supportive underwear may be recommended to assist with swelling and provide comfort. However, our surgeons do not recommend the use of compression garments following this procedure.

Individuals with desk-based roles may be able to return to work within approximately one week, although this can vary depending on the specifics of the procedure and individual recovery.

Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and exercise are usually restricted for 3–6 weeks, with the timeline tailored to each person’s healing progress and your surgeon’s guidance.

Long-Term Healing and Results

Although initial changes can often be seen once the early recovery period has passed, it may take 6 to 12 months for the outcome of the surgery to become fully apparent. Scars will typically continue to settle and mature over a period of 12–24 months.

Every individual heals at their own pace. Patients are advised to follow the postoperative instructions provided by their surgeon, attend follow-up appointments, and seek further advice if they have any concerns during recovery.

As with all surgical procedures, a Monsplasty carries potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss potential risks and complications during your consultation as part of the informed consent process. Visit our Risks and Complications page for more information. Risks and complications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Changes in skin sensation: Temporary or, in some cases, longer-lasting changes to feeling in the treated area may occur.
  • Poor scarring: All surgery will result in scars. While scars typically fade and soften over time, some patients may develop raised, red, or keloid scarring.
  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a possibility of infection, which may require treatment.
  • Anaesthetic risks: Risks associated with anaesthesia, including breathing difficulties, Nausea, allergic reaction, and more.
  • Delayed wound healing or asymmetry: In some cases, healing may take longer than expected, or the outcome may appear uneven.
  • Revision surgery: Further procedures may be required if complications occur or if the desired outcome is not achieved.

Monsplasty costs vary based on the complexity and duration of surgery, hospital fees (how long you stay in hospital), and anaesthetist fees. Due to AHPRA regulations, specific prices cannot be advertised. Me Clinic will provide a quote after consultation, so you can make an informed decision with a clear understanding of all costs involved.

Monsplasty is usually considered elective surgery and is not generally covered by Medicare or private health funds. In limited circumstances, if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, partial rebates may apply.

FAQs ...

A Monsplasty is generally considered to be cosmetic, so it is typically not covered by either Medicare or Private Health Insurance. However, Medicare or private health insurance may provide coverage if a qualified surgeon can document that excess pubic tissue is contributing to a clinically diagnosed medical issue.

Examples of Medical Conditions: Persistent skin irritation, including intertrigo, that has not responded to non-surgical management.
Recurrent infections or inflammation caused by friction or moisture in the pubic area.

Impact on Daily Living: A Monsplasty may also be considered if the size or projection of the mons pubis interferes with daily life, including activities such as sitting, exercising, or wearing clothing comfortably. The assessment of functional impairment is made on a case-by-case basis and requires a detailed evaluation by a specialist.

Patients considering Monsplasty for medical reasons should discuss their symptoms and goals with their surgeon, who can guide them on whether insurance coverage or Medicare rebates may apply.

FUPA stands for Fat Upper Pubic Area and is the colloquial term used to describe the presence of excess fat in the upper pubic area. Although it is not a medical term, it refers to the same area as the mons pubis, the fatty tissue located over the pubic bone.

The mons pubis is the medical term for the fatty area located over the pubic bone, just above the genital region. Its size and shape vary between individuals.

The term FUPA (Fat Upper Pubic Area) is sometimes used to describe excess fat in this same region.

While it is not a medical term, it refers to the same anatomical area as the mons pubis. In surgical discussions and procedures such as Monsplasty, the professional and medically accurate term mons pubis is used.

The FUPA, or excess fat in the upper pubic area (mons pubis), can be reduced through both non-surgical and surgical approaches, depending on the individual’s anatomy and goals:

Non-Surgical Approaches:

  • Weight management and exercise: General body fat reduction may help reduce the size of the area, although spot reduction is not possible.
  • Lifestyle choices: Maintaining a balanced diet and regular physical activity can help prevent further fat accumulation.

Surgical Approaches

  • Monsplasty (Pubic Mound Reduction): This surgical procedure is designed to remove excess fat and, in some cases, excess skin or tissue from the mons pubis.
  • Liposuction: For individuals with excess fat but suitable skin tone, Liposuction of the mons pubis may be sufficient to reduce its size.

Our surgeons evaluate each patient individually to determine whether a Monsplasty or Liposuction is the most suitable option. During a consultation, your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations, procedure details, the recovery process, and potential outcomes.
